LightStars Academy

Graduation requirements demand every student must show proficiency in both Reading/Writing/Communication and Mathematics, demonstrating readiness for college or a career. LightStars Academy provides a variety of options for students to showcase their learning and preparedness. Students are encouraged to regularly review and discuss these options with their family, counselor and instructors.

A student may graduate after having accumulated 22 or more units in the designated subject areas below.  Our graduates have accumulated at least 10 units through LightStars Academy, and have demonstrated online citizenship. A breakdown of specific requirements is as follows:

English Language Arts – 4 Units (40 Semester Hours)

    • English 9 – .5 unit (10 semester hours)
    • English 10 – .5 unit (10 semester hours)
    • English 11 – .5 unit (10 semester hours)
    • English 12– .5 unit (10 semester hours)

Mathematics – 3 Units (30 Semester Hours)

    • Algebra I – 1 unit (10 semester hours)
    • Geometry – 1 unit (10 semester hours)
    • Algebra II or another advanced math course – 1 unit (10 semester hours)

This provides students with a foundation in algebra, geometry, and higher-level math, aligning with college readiness standards. For students who are not planning to attend college, an alternative pathway focusing on practical math skills may be more beneficial.

    • Applied Mathematics A – 1 unit (10 semester hours)
    • Applied Mathematics B  – 1 unit (10 semester hours)

Science – 3 Units (30 Semester Hours)

    • Biology – 1 unit (10 semester hours)
    • Chemistry or Earth Science – 1 unit (10 semester hours)
    • Physics or elective science – 1 unit (10 semester hours)

A solid three-unit science requirement exposes students to both life and physical sciences, fulfilling general college preparatory recommendations.

Social Studies – 3 Units (30 Semester Hours)

    • US History – 1 unit (10 semester hours)
    • World History – 1 unit (10 semester hours)
    • Civics/Government or Economics – 1 unit (10 semester hours)

This combination gives students a comprehensive understanding of both national and global history, as well as insight into government structures and economic systems.

Physical Education and Health – 2 Units (20 Semester Hours)

    • Physical Education – 1.5 units, can include courses that develop physical fitness, teamwork, and health awareness (15 semester hours)
    • Health – .5 unit, can include courses that develop mindfulness, good mental health practices, etc. (5 semester hours)

Physical Education and Health encourage lifelong wellness habits and meets general high school requirements.

Fine/Practical Arts – 1.5 unit (15 semester hours)

The arts builds confidence and expands the world for students, while meeting high school requirements.

World Language – 2 Units (20 Semester Hours)

    • Level I – 1 unit (10 semester hours)
    • Level II – 1 unit (10 semester hours)

Two units in the same world language to fulfill college entry requirements for many institutions and support global awareness and communication skills.

Electives – 3.5 to 5 Units (30-50 Semester Hours)

With 3.5 to 5 remaining credits, students have flexibility to explore electives in areas like art technology, or additional academic subjects that suit their interests and goals. This allows students to personalize their educational experience while fulfilling the overall 22-credit requirement.  This structure balances core requirements with elective options, ensuring a well-rounded education in line with college and career readiness.
