Types of Assessments

  • Formative Assessments: Low-stakes evaluations, such as quizzes, class activities, and discussion posts, that help students and instructors monitor learning progress.
  • Summative Assessments: High-stakes evaluations, such as exams, essays, projects, and presentations, used to assess cumulative understanding at the end of a unit or course.
  • Participation and Engagement: Active involvement in discussions, group activities, and attendance may also contribute to the final grade.

Weighting of Grades

The weighting of grades may vary slightly by course, but the typical distribution is:

  • Formative Assessments:            30%
  • Summative Assessments:          50%
  • Participation and Engagement: 20%

Instructors will provide detailed syllabi outlining specific grading criteria at the beginning of each course.

Submission Deadlines and Late Work

  • Submission Deadlines: Students are expected to submit all assignments by the due dates provided in the course schedule.
  • Late Work: Assignments submitted late may incur penalties, typically 5% per day, unless prior arrangements are made with the instructor due to extenuating circumstances. After seven days, late work may not be accepted.
  • Extensions: Students requiring extensions due to emergencies must communicate with the instructor as soon as possible.

Academic Integrity

  • Plagiarism, cheating, or any form of academic dishonesty is strictly prohibited. Violations will result in a zero for the assignment and potential disciplinary action.
  • Students are encouraged to use proper citations and acknowledge the sources of their work.

Grade Appeals

Students who believe a grade was assigned in error or unfairly may appeal by following these steps:

    1. Contact the Instructor: Discuss the concern directly with the instructor within 7 days of receiving the grade.
    2. Submit a Formal Appeal: If unresolved, submit a written appeal to the administration within 14 days, including the course name, assignment details, and the reason for the appeal.
    3. Final Review: The administration will review the case and provide a final decision.

 Feedback and Growth

  • Instructors are committed to providing timely, constructive feedback on all assessments to help students improve and excel.
  • Students are encouraged to seek additional help during office hours or through LightStars Academy’s academic support services if needed.

LightStars Academy values inclusivity and will provide accommodations for students with documented learning differences or disabilities. Students requiring special accommodations should notify the administration and their instructors at the start of the course.
