Active attendance and participation are essential for success at LightStars Academy. As an online learning platform, we value consistent engagement in classes, timely completion of assignments, and meaningful contributions to class discussions. This policy outlines expectations and procedures to ensure students thrive academically while maintaining flexibility in their schedules.
Attendance Expectations
Synchronous Classes (Live Sessions)
- Students are expected to attend all scheduled live classes as outlined in the course syllabus.
- Attendance will be recorded based on login time and presence during the session.
- Students unable to attend a live session must notify the instructor in advance and review the recorded session (if available).
Asynchronous Classes (Self-Paced)
- Students must log in and participate regularly by completing assignments, quizzes, and discussion posts within the required timeframes.
- A minimum of 3 active logins per week is recommended to ensure steady progress.

Participation Expectations
Class Engagement
- Students should actively participate in live discussions, group activities, and collaborative projects.
- Contributions should be respectful, thoughtful, and relevant to the course content.
Course Assignments
- Students are expected to complete and submit assignments, quizzes, and exams by their deadlines.
- Late submissions may incur penalties unless prior arrangements are made with the instructor.
Excused Absences
Absences may be excused for the following reasons:
- Medical or family emergencies (documentation may be required).
- Technical difficulties (e.g., power outages, connectivity issues) reported to the instructor promptly.
- Other significant conflicts, such as extracurricular events or travel, pre-approved by the instructor.
Unexcused Absences
- Failure to attend live sessions or engage in coursework without prior notification may be considered unexcused.
- Unexcused absences exceeding 2 consecutive weeks may result in administrative action, including withdrawal from the course.
Makeup Work
- Students with excused absences are responsible for reviewing class materials and completing any missed work within a reasonable timeframe, as determined by the instructor.
- Students with unexcused absences may not be eligible to make up certain assignments or activities.
Monitoring and Communication
- Instructors will monitor student attendance and participation weekly.
- Students at risk of falling behind will receive a written warning and an opportunity to discuss challenges with their instructor.
- Parents/guardians of minor students will be notified if attendance or participation concerns arise.
Consequences for Non-Compliance
- 1st Warning: Notification from the instructor with a plan to improve attendance and participation.
- 2nd Warning: Notification from administration with a formal intervention plan.
- 3rd Violation: Possible removal from the course or the academy, subject to review.
Appeals
Students or parents may appeal attendance or participation decisions by submitting a written request to the administration within 14 days of receiving notice of a decision.
Tips for Successful Attendance and Participation
- Schedule regular times for logging into the platform and completing coursework.
- Communicate proactively with instructors about any challenges or conflicts.
- Use the academic calendar and course reminders to stay on track with deadlines.
